The Sacrifice of Jesus Christ
Why did it have to be so bloody?
(We expand on the phrase "Jesus Christ who gave his life" from the 'Typical Christian' page.)
Blood is Special
We saw in the pages to do with the 'Spirit in Man' how that God said that the life was in the blood.
Blood is mentioned many times in the Old Testament in relation to sacrificial offerings.
Ex 30:10 Once a year Aaron shall make atonement on its horns. This annual atonement must be made with the blood of the atoning sin offering for the generations to come. It is most holy to the LORD. (from New International Version)
With regard to sacrifices,
Heb 9:22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. (from New International Version)
Lev 17:11-12 11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life. 12 Therefore I say to the Israelites, "None of you may eat blood, nor may an alien living among you eat blood. (from New International Version)
Blood is Essential For Forgiveness
The forgiveness discussed here is that by God toward men, not the forgiveness by a man toward his neighbour.
Heb 9:22 . . . without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. (from New International Version)
Rev 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, KJV
Jesus Christ the Sacrifice
Jesus became the sin offering as pictured in Old Testament times.
Rom 8:3 . . . God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. . . (from New International Version)
Eph 5:2 ve, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (from New International Version)
Heb 13:12 And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood. (from New International Version)
Isa 53:6-7 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. (from New International Version)
The Sacrifice of Jesus Christ Paid Our Debt
Acts 20:28 . . . Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. (from New International Version)
1 Cor 6:19-20 19 . . . You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God . . (from New International Version)
